100% Renewable Energy Goal Achieved:
100% Renewable Power Program At Cheaper Rates
Oak Park, IL
The City of Oak Park, IL is bringing 100% renewable electricity to all its residents and small businesses at lower rates than the conventional utility. In April, 2011, the citizens of Oak Park approved an electricity aggregation program that allows the city to bundle residential and small business customer accounts to bid for cheaper power prices on the open market. The city had a choice of providers and found the price was right to go all renewable.
Oak Park signed a two year contract with Integrys Energy to receive renewable energy certificates(RECs) that match its customers' electricity consumption. RECs represent purchases of power from renewable sources like wind and solar. At the same time, customers will enjoy 25% lower prices than the rates currently approved by the state. The program's start date was the beginning of 2012, and the savings to the Oak Park community over the following two years is expected to be about $4.5 million.
